Aya and Avi’s Airplane Adventure, a new book that showcases diversity and representation in aviation takes flight – highlighting the adventures of two children and their LGBT parents who discover you can be anyone you want to be.CHICAGO, April 2, 2021 // -- You can do anything and be anyone you want to be. This is the message of the highly anticipated new children’s book, Aya and Avi’s Airplane Adventure. The book features main characters Aya – an aviation-obsessed girl who dreams of being a pilot and Avi – who can be a bit shy at first but learns to love the magic of flight; and follows their journey through an airplane ride with Dad and Papa to visit their fabulous Aunt Sofia.
The book features many characters who are underrepresented in traditional children’s books. According to a recent study by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, there were nine times more books written about talking animals than LGBT characters and three times more than books with Asian characters. Books with talking animals as main characters accounted for more than books featuring Black/African, Latinx, Asian, and Pacific Islander characters combined.
“I wanted to write a book that I could see myself in,” said author Jaspreet Travels. “As a lifelong aviation geek (#avgeek) who has seen the diversity and opportunities available within the aviation industry, I wanted to show the future aviators of tomorrow that anything is possible.”
To celebrate the initial launch of the book, author Jaspreet Travels is making a $250 donation to Rainbow Railroad - an organization that helps LGBT individuals living in fear of persecution, torture, or murder, find a path to safety to start a new life. A portion of profits from every book sold will go to Rainbow Railroad.
